DNA Barcoding Assistant 1.5.2

The DNA Barcoding Assistant is a mobile application designed for field technicians to facilitate specimen data collection within the scope of the International Barcode of Life (iBOL) project and related biodiversity initiatives. The application offers an intuitive interface allowing users to capture unique identifiers and compile comprehensive records that include provisional taxonomic designations, digital imagery, geographic coordinates, and detailed collection event information. These specimen records can be exported via email as attachments compatible with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel. The imported data and associated images can subsequently be verified, amended, and uploaded to the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD), following the submission protocols specified in the BOLD user manual.

To enhance the efficiency of cataloging and tracking specimens for institutions such as museums, tissue banks, and vouchering facilities, the application incorporates open-source technology to decode various barcode symbols affixed to storage containers like vials, Whirl-Pak® bags, and Nalgene® bottles. Supported barcode formats include EAN/UPC, QR codes, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, DataBar (RSS), Interleaved 2 of 5, and Data Matrix. Users also have the option to manually enter sample identification numbers if barcode decoding is unavailable or impractical.

From an educational perspective, the DNA Barcoding Assistant serves as a versatile digital tool for students engaged in biodiversity research and exploration. It provides an effective platform for promoting bioliteracy through hands-on experience with specimen identification and data management in real-world scenarios.
